Upper Engadin, between two lakes
Sils Maria and the valley
Sils sits on the flat ground between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana, with Val Fex opening behind it to the south. You can cross the village in ten minutes, and most of it is closed to cars.
On foot from the door
Lake Sils is four minutes away across the meadow. The Chastè, a wooded peninsula, makes a forty-minute loop and is the easy walk for a grey day.
Val Fex starts behind the church. It's an hour and a half on foot to Fex Crasta and the small church there with the painted vault.
Through the year
- December to March: trails on the meadows, and across the frozen lakes once the commune says the ice will hold.
- Second Sunday in March: the Engadin ski marathon passes along the shore below the house, some fourteen thousand skiers in a morning.
- June: the ice goes, the meadow flowers arrive in a rush, and it stays light until ten.
- July to September: walking, swimming for the hardy, and the cable car up to the lakes on the far side of the ridge.
- October and November: the larches turn yellow and most hotels shut. This one doesn't.

Up the hill
The Furtschellas cable car leaves from the edge of the village, a ten-minute walk, and climbs to about 2,300 metres. The Corvatsch cable car starts at Surlej, across the lake, and goes a good deal higher.
Both close for a few weeks in spring and again in autumn. The desk keeps the dates on a card by the door.
