The Gauge

A short counter and eleven stools, named after the snow gauge on the roof. The day's reading goes on the board at five, and someone always has a guess about tomorrow's.

From four until half past midnight

It opens when the lifts close. Between four and six it's the warmest room on the ground floor, full of people with cold hands all arriving at once.

After dinner it thins out to a few readers by the stove. Last orders at midnight.

What's poured

Röteli, the cherry liqueur Graubünden drinks at New Year and this bar serves all winter. Beer from a brewery in Pontresina. Hot apple juice with cinnamon for whoever is driving the pass.

A short list of cocktails, shaken in a brass shaker older than most of the staff.

The board

The chalkboard by the door shows what the roof mast read at five: air temperature, snow depth on the meadow, wind at the ridge. Under that, in the barman's hand, his forecast for the next day.

He's right about two times in three. That beats the radio.
